School and District News

  • Safety During Excessive Heat 6/18

Dear Pearl River School District Community,

With temperatures predicted to reach the mid and upper 90s from today (June 18) through Friday (June 21), and an excessive heat warning issued by the National Weather Service, we are taking steps to keep all District students and staff both safe and comfortable. Our daily school schedules will remain unchanged, however, the heat will likely alter outdoor activities and events.

Some steps and information in anticipation of the week’s hot weather include:

    SCHOOL BUILDINGS
Classrooms, offices and libraries are all AC equipped. Temperatures in spaces without air conditioning will be monitored, and students and staff will be moved from any space where the temperature becomes excessively hot. Bottle filling stations in school buildings are available for refilling water bottles as needed. Parents are encouraged to make sure students carry a refillable water bottle.

    OUTDOOR EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

The Pearl River Schools will follow guidance from NYSPHSAA’s Heat Index Procedure through the Athletic Department. All outdoor activities (PE and recess) will be canceled when the “real feel” temperature reaches 96 degrees. When the air temperature and heat index reach extreme levels, outdoor recess, events and activities may be modified, canceled, rescheduled or moved indoors.

    SCHOOL TRANSPORTATION

Most of our routes utilize air conditioned buses. Bus drivers will take steps and follow protocols to make buses as comfortable as possible given the weather conditions, including continuous use of air conditioning where available, as well as fans, open windows and roof hatches on buses without air conditioning.

This link provides additional information on remaining safe during extreme hot weather. The health and safety of our students and staff remains our top priority.

    Sincerely,
    Marco Pochintesta, Ed.D.
    Superintendent of Schools
